Roughly half the world’s population still lives on the equivalent of about US$2 a day. And in many places, having a job doesn’t guarantee the ability to escape from poverty. Sustainable growth requires the creation of quality jobs that stimulate the economy while not harming the environment.

Each year, an estimated 1.3 billion tonnes of food ends up rotting in the bins of consumers and retailers, or spoiling due to poor transportation and harvesting practices. By promoting sustainable consumption, we can “do more and better with less,” increasing net welfare gains while reducing resource use, degradation and pollution along the entire supply chain.

There is no country in the world that is not experiencing first-hand the drastic effects of climate change. Greenhouse gas emissions are now more than 50% higher than their 1990 level, fueling the global warming that threatens irreversible consequences if we do not take action now.

The world’s oceans – their temperature, chemistry, currents and life – drive global systems that make the Earth habitable for humankind. How we manage this vital resource is essential for humanity as a whole, and to counterbalance the effects of climate change.

Human life depends on the land as much as the ocean. Plants provide 80% of our diet, and we rely on agriculture as an economic resource and means of development. Forests account for 30% of the Earth’s surface, providing vital habitats and sources for clean air and water.

Without peace, stability, human rights and effective governance based on the rule of law, we cannot hope to achieve sustainable development. While some regions enjoy sustained levels of peace, security and prosperity, others fall into seemingly endless cycles of conflict and violence.

The World Pulse is hitting the road with a number of stops across the U.S. this year. Click on a location to find out if you can attend and get all the details.
In September 2015, 193 world leaders committed to 17 goals to preserve and protect our planet. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are guiding a united effort to end poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and tackle climate change. Learn more about the goals.
The World Pulse is the first real-time view of the “health” of the SDGs — and our planet’s future. It analyzes conversations from Twitter to measure interest levels on SDG-related topics which are then visualized as a heartbeat. By sharing our support of the SDGs through social media, we help spread the word about them. This powers the pulse and helps to save our world.
The pulse data visualization is generated through real-time social media analysis. Twitter API is used to search for tweets that contain specific hashtags related to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. This allows us to map how many people are interested in the issues and topics around each of the Goals. Monitoring these conversations helps us understand how effective SDG efforts are, ultimately helping us see whether we’ll be able to meet the Goals.
Social data is a powerful tool. Analyzing it allows us to understand how many people are talking about a specific subject. It shows us how quickly or slowly an idea can spread. It even allows us to understand how people feel (their sentiment) about a certain subject. Tracking social conversations over time can show us whether people all over the world are changing to more sustainable ways and helping us to meet the Sustainable Development Goals.
Western Digital and Domestic Data Streamers are proud to support the United Nations and the 193 countries committed to meeting the Sustainable Development Goals. We believe that data is a catalyst for change and a purveyor of possibilities. Together, we have designed the World Pulse to make the data accessible, so that and the real-time health of the SDGs can be easily understood by anyone. To learn more about how Western Digital is championing data-driven innovations, visit DataMakesPossible.com.
We also invite any organization conducting SDGs efforts to utilize the World Pulse to help bring those efforts to life and invite you to contact us if you are interested in partnering.
